MLB Baseball Betting: Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees

The Toronto Blue Jays couldn’t deal with being in first place alone–after dropping a 1-0 verdict to the New York Yankees on Monday they’re back in a tie for the top spot in the AL East with the Baltimore Orioles who were idle yesterday. This time it’s hard to blame the Jays. They got a decent start from R.A. Dickey who went 5 innings allowing 4 hits and 1 earned run. Toronto ran into a buzzsaw in the form of minor league callup Chad Green. In his fifth start of the year Green was wicked going 6 innings allowing 2 hits and striking out 11. New York is a very interesting team at this point. They begin the ‘post A-Rod’ era playing better than expected baseball and in the process are getting themselves into contention in the AL East. The Yankees have won 8 of 11 and are now just 5.5 games out of first place. The Boston Red Sox also took advantage of the Jays’ loss as they won 3-2 in Cleveland to pull within 1 game of the leaders.
This is obviously a big series for both teams. The Yankees can make a serious move toward the top while the Blue Jays *have* to keep winning just to keep pace with their rivals. Toronto will start right hander Marco Estrada who has been capable and consistent this year though hasn’t always received the support from his teammates that he deserves. Estrada has a 2.95 ERA overall with a 1.036 WHIP, a 3.17 ERA with a 1.022 WHIP on the road and a 3.00 ERA with a 1.222 WHIP in his last three. The Yankees will send right hander Michael Pineda who has a similar W/L record as Estrada but a less impressive statline. Pineda has a 5.07 ERA and a 1.355 WHIP overall, a 5.04 ERA and a 1.263 WHIP and a 5.50 ERA in his last three with a 1.500 WHIP.
Toronto has been playing well of late and have done well against right handers all year (51-34 +8.1 units) averaging 5.2 runs per game and a .255 batting average. Not really sold on the Yankees as serious contenders and the Jays have had their number at Yankee Stadium in recent years winning 7 of the last 10 meetings.
