MLB Baseball Betting: Baltimore Orioles at New York Yankees
The Toronto Blue Jays are off on Thursday but they’ll definitely have their eye on this game. The AL East race is getting very interesting. Toronto won an afternoon game on Wednesday and both the second place Boston Red Sox and the first place Baltimore Orioles are in action in the nighttime portion of the card. Pending the late results here’s how things stand–Baltimore is in first place by 1/2 game over the Red Sox and 1 game over the Blue Jays. The Yankees aren’t in the mix but they’ve been giving the Orioles fits during this series. New York is off the pace now but they have a remote chance of getting in the ‘lead pack’ as well 6.5 games out of first place.
The Yankees will start lefthander C.C. Sabathia in this game. He’s been mediocre at best this year and in pretty dismal form of late. The Yankees have gone 8-8 in his 16 starts this season including a 3-4 record at home. Overall, he’s got a 3.94 ERA and a 1.388 WHIP. His home ERA is 4.72 with a 1.500 WHIP. His last three games have been rough–17 innings allowing 14 earned runs for a 7.41 ERA. The Yankees got him off the hook in one of those starts but the other two were New York losses.
Baltimore will go with Chris Tillman who has been excellent this year and even better lately. Baltimore has won 17 of Tillman’s 20 starts this season. His ERA isn’t mind blowing but it is solid–3.29 ERA overall and 1.213 WHIP. On the road, it’s a 3.37 ERA and a 1.125 WHIP. Baltimore has won his last three starts with Tillman going 21 innings allowing just 3 earned runs for a 1.29 ERA in that stretch.
The Yankees and Orioles have split 8 games this season. This looks like a good spot for a Baltimore win. They hit lefthanders pretty well (5.1 runs per game) and catch Sabathia struggling. Tillman is in excellent form and all of a sudden this is a big game for the O’s with the rest of the divisional contenders closing in. The price is reasonable given Tillman’s numbers versus Sabathia’s and the relative success of the teams this season. Baltimore gets a much needed win here.
