MLB Baseball Betting: New York Yankees at Toronto Blue Jays

It’s Memorial Day in the United States but it’s Monday in Canada and there’s baseball on the schedule. The Toronto Blue Jays will begin a three game series against their AL East rival New York Yankees at the Rogers Centre. The teams are separated by 1/2 game for third and fourth place in the AL East and both have been in decent form lately winning 7 of their last 10 games. The division remains wide open and currently the Blue Jays trail the second place Baltimore Orioles by 4 games and the first place Boston Red Sox by five.
The Blue Jays were supposed to be the team to beat in the AL East this year but they haven’t been hitting. That’s a curious development as they’re considered to have one of the best offenses in baseball but that’s what’s going on at the moment. They’ve managed to keep their head above water with solid pitching and defense. Today’s matchup features a very good pitching matchup as Ivan Nova goes for the Yankees and Marco Estrada takes the mound for the Blue Jays. Nova has a 2.74 ERA overall but a tidy 1.50 ERA on the road. Admittedly, that’s based on the result of just one game but the important takeaway is that Nova is a very capable pitcher on the mound for the road team.
The Blue Jays’ Estrada has also put up excellent numbers this season. He’s got a 2.67 ERA overall and an even better 1.69 ERA at home. Curiously, the Jays haven’t won when he’s been on the hill which is a testimony to how poorly they’ve been hitting this year. Toronto has won only 4 of Estrada’s nine starts this season. This looks like a very even matchup. Estrada has split four games against the Yankees in his career and Nova has split ten games against the Jays in his career.
Tough matchup to handicap but our numbers suggest that the Jays have the better team and are actually somewhat undervalued here. That may be due to the pinstripes on the Yankees jersey but for whatever reason we expect to see Toronto go on a nice run as the summer progressses.
