MLB Baseball Betting: Toronto Blue Jays at Boston Red Sox

Only one Canadian professional sports team in action right now–that’s the Toronto Blue Jays who have begun their season. It’s strange to not have any Canadian teams in the Stanley Cup playoffs but for now this is it until the Canadian Football League season begins. The good news is that much is expected out of Toronto this season with many pundits calling for them to repeat their AL East title of a year ago. The bad news is that they’re not off to a great start–they’re 5-5 though they did take 2 of 3 from the New York Yankees in a midweek series that ended yesterday. The Boston Red Sox are 4-5 in the early going and were idle yesterday.
The Blue Jays will start R.A. Dickey and the veteran is coming off a rough start at home against this same opponent. Dickey looked OK in his first start allowing 3 ER at Tampa Bay but was shelled for 8 hits and 6 earned runs last time out though he did strike out nine. With only 10 innings of work that gives him a bloated 8.10 ERA on the season with a 5.40 ERA on the road. Boston will counter with right hander Rick Porcello–this is his second start of the year and he got the win in Dickey’s above referenced loss. Not a great outing for Porcello either as he went 6 innings allowing 7 hits, 4 earned runs, 2 home runs and a walk though he did strike out 7.
Toronto is the better team top to bottom and we expect to see this play out more as the season progresses. Boston doesn’t look like much this season so don’t expect them to be in the divisional title hunt. They’ve been a huge money loser at home in recent years–over the last three seasons they’re 78-88 at Fenway Park for a loss of -30.7 units. They’ve also lost a ton of money against divisional rivals in this timeframe going 69-90 -21.8 units. They’re also -35.3 units overall and -20.9 units against right handers. What this suggests is that they’re overvalued across the board. They’re definitely not the best team in this matchup and we’ll take the Blue Jays and Dickey to get revenge for the opening week loss at the Rogers Centre.
