The Toronto Blue Jays continue their fight for AL East supremacy as they take on a New York Yankees team that is still hanging around the top level of the division. The bigger concern now might be the Boston Red Sox who have now won 6 straight and are hitting their stride at the right time of year. The Jays dropped the first game of this series as their offense took the night off but they bounced back to win the second game 12-6. With the Orioles still a threat and the Red Sox surging clearly the final two games of this set are of paramount importance. The Yankees are just 6.5 games out of first place and still have a shot to win the division but they need to get back into winning form. Without a very strong run it’s hard to think that they’ll have enough to beat the three top teams in this division.

Toronto will start left hander J.A. Happ who has been very strong for the Jays this season. In fact, he’s been their most competent and dependable pitcher on the staff. Toronto has won 18 of his 23 starts overall earning +11.8 units. Happ is one of 8 Major League pitchers to have earned 10 or more units this season. Toronto is 7-4 +2 units in Happ’s road starts and they’ve won his last 3. You can go back further than that–Toronto has won 11 straight Happ starts. Overall he’s got a 2.96 ERA with a 1.140 WHIP, on the road he’s got a 3.15 ERA and a 1.079 WHIP. He’s been spectacular in his last three assignments pitching 19 innings allowing only 2 runs and 11 hits while striking out 24 and walking only 6.

New York will start their lefthander, C.C. Sabathia and the veteran southpaw isn’t having a good year. The Yankees have won 11 of his 21 starts including 6 of 10 at home. Sabathia has a 4.20 ERA and 1.383 WHIP overall, a 4.78 ERA and a 1.457 WHIP at home and a 5.71 ERA and 1.615 WHIP in his last three starts. Both teams are right around .500 against left handed starters this year which leaves the Jays -8 units and the Yankees down a unit or so. With Happ’s form can’t fade him and the Jays.
