MLB Baseball Betting: Toronto Blue Jays at Seattle Mariners

The Toronto Blue Jays face a tough test over the weekend as they head to the Pacific Northwest to take on the Seattle Mariners. The Mariners aren’t having a great season but they’re always a hard team to play at home. Trivia fact–the Blue Jays and Mariners both entered the American League as expansion teams in 1977. The Blue Jays are in second place in the American League East but in reality it’s a three way battle beneath the division leading New York Yankees. The Blue Jays are 5.5 games back of New York with Tampa Bay 6.5 games out and Baltimore 7 games out. The hapless Boston Red Sox are bringing up the rear in last place in the AL East.

Seattle is in fourth place in the AL West at the moment though for all intents and purposes they’re tied with Oakland for the position. Even in fourth place the Mariners are still in the postseason hunt since the division is very tightly packed. The Los Angeles Angels currently lead the AL West with a two game advantage over the Houston Astros. There’s a big gap between the top two teams to the third place Texas Rangers (8.5 back) and the Mariners and A’s. Seattle is 4-6 in their last ten games while Toronto is 5-5 during that stretch.

Seattle will start their ace tonight as ‘King Felix’ Hernandez starts for the Mariners. Hernandez is as good as ever and especially at home where the M’s have won 7 of his 10 starts. At home, Hernandez has 2.60 ERA and a 0.980 WHIP. He’s been very sharp lately with a 1.35 ERA in his last three starts though he hasn’t been getting good run support–the Mariners have lost two of Hernandez’s last three starts. He’ll be opposed by Toronto’s Drew Hutchison who has been hit hard on the road and has a 8.81 ERA away from home. Despite that bloated number he’s received the type of run support that Hernandez hasn’t which is why the Jays are 5-5 in his away starts.

Toronto has been horrible in this price range this year–they’re 0-9 -9 units as a road underdog of +125 to +150. We’ll look for the Mariners and Hernandez to add to those woes.
