‘Canada’s NFL team’ aka the Buffalo Bills did what they had to do last week. Faced with the prospect of an 0-3 start to the season they played like a desperate team as they whipped the Arizona Cardinals 33-18 at home as +5.5 underdogs. It kept the wolves from around head coach Rex Ryan’s door for at least this week but things aren’t going to get any easier for Buffalo as they head to Gillette Stadium to play the New England Patriots on Sunday. Even if you don’t like the Patriots you have to respect them. They’ve played their first three games without starting quarterback Tom Brady and the last game and a half without backup quarterback Jimmy Garropolo. Third string quarterback Jacoby Brissett has played since then but he might be out of action with a thumb injury. Most teams would be lucky to get out of this situation with a 2-2 record. The Patriots are looking at a perfect 4-0 SU/ATS start to the season.

Worst case scenario–the Patriots might have to start emergency backup quarterback Julian Edelman this week. Edelman is a wide receiver though he was a pretty capable quarterback during college at Kent State. Amazingly, head coach Bill Belichick doesn’t seem particularly concerned that he might have to start a quarterback that hasn’t played the position in nearly a decade. Word on the street is that backup Jimmy Garropolo might be ready to go and that could explain his coach’s calm demeanor. He’s also got a monster running back in LeGarrette Blount that will make any quarterback’s job easier.

Buffalo would be hard pressed to compete with the Patriots under the best of circumstances and they’ve got a lot of banged up players including big play wide receiver Sammy Watkins listed as ‘questionable’. Would it matter? The Patriots have won 8 of the last 9 head to head and are on a 20-7-2 ATS run at home. No line on the game as of yet due to the fluid Patriots’ quarterback situation but when the game goes up the Patriots are the play even if Steve Grogan is named the starter for Sunday.
