Christmas Break brings a slowdown in Canadian sports. Hockey and basketball are off for the holiday so we’ll look at Monday Night Football action between the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys. Detroit *is* just three and a half hours from Toronto, after all. The Lions will be hitting the road on Monday Night traveling to Dallas to face the Dallas Cowboys and are trying to fight their way into the playoffs. At least they know the situation they face. No matter what happens they’ll ‘control their own destiny’ in their head to head battle with the Green Bay Packers. The Packers are 9-6 on the year and beat Minnesota yesterday. A win will give the Lions a one game advantage while a loss will leave the two teams tied. Detroit lost at Lambeau Field earlier this season but will play the Packers at home in the final week of the season. That means if they win that game they’ll win the division.

The game means a lot more to Detroit for the reasons discussed above. Dallas is sitting pretty at 12-2 meaning that they can lose this game (and next week’s game) and still be guaranteed the best record in the NFC and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. That leaves all sorts of scenarios on the Dallas side of the ball. There’s been talk that former starter Tony Romo might play here and in the final week of the season to give him some playing time before the playoffs begin and to ‘showcase’ him for other teams since he’s as good as gone after this season. As of yet, no official word as to whether it’ll be Romo or Dak Prescott under center for this game. Running back Ezekiel Elliott is another guy the Cowboys might want to protect. Dallas has a lot of injuries along the defensive line that they’d like to get healthy before the playoffs.

With so many questions and such dubious motivation for Dallas we’ll go with the road team plus the points. Typically, you want to go against the team in a ‘must win’ situation but in a matchup against a team that might be resting starters there’s only one way to play it.
