The NFL makes a big deal of their opening game of the year and so to does Canada with their ‘national sport’. This year the biggest event will be in Calgary where the NHL, in partnership with the Calgary Flames and local tourism officials will hold the 2015 Molson Canadian NHL Face-Off at the historic Fort Calgary. Like the old saying goes, if ‘it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ and the NHL is following the template created by pro football–live music and game viewing on a big screen of the Flames’ home opener against the Vancouver Canucks.

NHL marketing honcho Brian Jennings said that events like this are all about the fans: “Celebrating the start of a new season with the greatest hockey fans is what the Molson Canadian NHL Face-Off is all about. The atmosphere at this event leading up to puck drop is incredible – you can feel the energy in the air. Fans are excited for a new season to launch and so are we.”

Molson President and CEO Stewart Glendinning chimed in: “Hockey lies at the heart of the Molson Canadian brand. The city of Calgary provides the perfect backdrop to celebrate the start of the season, and we’re excited to continue to show fans that Molson Canadian is willing to do Anything For Hockey.”

The event is billed as ‘family friendly’–though given the infamously rowdy nature of Flames’ fans that remains to be seen. The fun starts at 3 PM local time with the usual assortment of food, drink, music, swag to buy and similar attractions. The main event of the evening will be the Flames’ opening home game which is a rematch of their 2015 Stanley Cup playoff series against hated rivals the Vancouver Canucks. Giant outdoor video screens will be set up at Fort Calgary for prime viewing pleasure.

Also involved at the corporate level are some of the other sponsors of NHL hockey including Scotiabank, Rogers, Bridgestone, Honda, Mondelez, Oh Henry!, Reebok, Samsung and Tim Hortons. They’ll have their own assortment of swag, giveaways and attractions. More featured events will be announced during the coming weeks leading up to the event.
